A 30-Minute Entryway Drop Zone

A 30-Minute Entryway Drop Zone

Keys, mail, backpacks and shoes all land by the door because that is where everyone stops. Instead of fighting it, give each thing a place right there. You can set it up in about half an hour.

  1. Clear it out. Take everything off the floor, the hooks and any table by the door. Put back only what gets used every week.
  2. Give each person a hook. Hang hooks at two heights so kids can reach their own. One coat and one bag per hook is plenty.
  3. Add a tray for small things. A shallow tray or bowl near the door catches keys, sunglasses and earbuds.
  4. Put bins under the bench. One bin per person for hats, gloves or sports gear keeps the floor clear. Label them with names so nobody has to ask.
  5. Use a boot tray. A tray with a raised edge holds wet shoes and keeps mud off the floor. Leave enough room for two people to take off their shoes at the same time.
  6. Handle the mail. A wall pocket for incoming mail and a small basket for recycling stop the pile from moving to the kitchen counter.
  7. Make a reset rule. Before bed, someone puts things back where they go. It takes two minutes.
