A Closet Edit With Bins and Shelves

A crowded closet usually needs fewer things before it needs more storage. Do the edit first, then add bins and shelves to hold what is left.

  1. Take everything out. It is the fastest way to see what you really have. Lay it all out on the bed.
  2. Sort into three piles: keep, donate and fix. Ask a friend or your partner to help. A second opinion makes the donate pile easier.
  3. Measure before you buy. Write down the shelf width, the depth and the height between shelves. Bins that are too deep stick out and get in the way of the door.
  4. Use the height. Add a shelf above the rod for bins of seasonal clothes, or a second rod for shirts and kids' clothes.
  5. Pick bins you can see into, or label them. If you cannot tell what is inside, it gets forgotten.
  6. Give shoes their own spot. A shoe shelf or a rack on the floor keeps pairs together and out of the pile. Kids can use a low bin they reach on their own.
  7. Group like things. Keep sweaters together, workout clothes together and bags together. Fold what stretches and hang what wrinkles.
  8. Keep a donate bag in the closet. When something does not fit or does not get worn, it goes straight in.

Send us your closet measurements and what you need to store, and we will suggest bins and shelves that fit.
